5 injured in an attack in Chamba in Himachal at hydro power site

In a grusome attack, five people, including a Zila parishad member, vice pradhan of Jadera panchayat in Chamba and three others were attacked and seriously injured allegedly by contractors of Hul Hydro Power Private Limited.

These people were attacked in village Chungah where the villagers had gathered to hold a meeting to oppose the construction of the 3.8 MW Hul hydroelectric project being constructed on Hul Nala, a tributary of the Ravi River.

Those attacked are Ratan Chand, a Zila Parishad member, Man Singh, an vice pradhan of Jadera Panchayat and three residents Hemraj, Laxman and Manoj and were hospitalized at Chamba District Hospital.

The locals had been opposing the construction of the hydroelectric project due to its impacts on the local forests, water resources and environment since 2005.

No case was registered till the reports last came in.

    This is really serious. Hydroelectric power is full of problems. But more importantly, we can't let thugs push this through by force.

    The problem here is the state is totally in hands of these 'investors'. These 'thugs' have a mock approval from the state machinery to get things settled at their own level.

    Don't be surprised if one day you may see a Singur type uprising in Himachal against these hydro companies!
