Shimla: In a shocking statement in the Himachal Vidan Sabha, Town and Country Planning Minister Mahinder Singh admitted that out of 118 towers installed by mobile companies in Shimla only 16 have been installed with permission.

We will take action against the mobile phone companies for installing towers without the government’s permission and without following the procedure and guidelines framed by the government, Town and Country Planning Minister Mahinder Singh said during the question hour in the state assembly.

As many as 99 towers have been installed without the permission of authorities concerned. In some of the cases, the companies have sought permission after installing the towers,’ he said in reply to a question of Congress legislator Kaul Singh Thakur.

Under the guidelines, mobile service providers have to take clearances from the government before installing a tower.

The government had framed a policy in 2006 in which guidelines, rules and regulations were framed for installing a tower. No tower would be installed within 100 metre radius of hospitals and educational institutes the minister said.

Big Telecom names, Airtel, Reliance, BSNL, Idea, Aircel, Vodafone, Tata and S-Tel are among the telecom players in Himachal Pradesh.

Telecom companies in Himachal have been flouting norms in the state for so long. Himachal Live had done a story sometimes back over the third rate customer service of a leading telecom company putting customers to inconvenience. Major telecom companies have re-trenched it’s workforce in the past once they had set their operations in the state pushing Himachal youths towards un-employment.

It is surprising to note that there is extremely less Himachali representation in the senior management of these telecom companies, even in the companies who had set  up shop in the earlier telecom revolution days of the 90s. It is heartening to note that the Government has finally come out with a statement against the powerful telecom lobby in the state. Government should investigate the actual  number of Himachal workforce which has been asked to leave for the past 3 years in the state.
