Finally the word is out. BJP is back to the Ram temple issue at Ayodhya. As reported in The Tribune BJP did a major political somersault by reintroducing Ram and Ram Mandir, issues it had distanced itself earlier from, at its national executive meet.
Now how can a party act so dumb and stupid? 17 years is a long time to rake up this issue again. I think the timing of raking up this issue is all wrong. India is in a recession and people are living in the fear of jobs getting lost. No one knows whether tomorrow their job will be safe or not. Raking up this issue will mean more tension between Hindus and Muslims and more communal clashes. In such a scenario overall economic scenario of the country will get affected. No one wants this kind of an atmosphere, neither the Hindus nor the Muslims.
BJP made two major mistakes which will spoil it’s performance in the elections. First, it under estimated the quantum of economic growth the country had experienced before the recession and Mumbai attack period. Manmohan Singh has led the country well during this period and he himself enjoys a great respect from the country men. It is a rarest of the rare chance that a well educated, honest man is sitting on the chair of Prime Minister who does not belong to any particular caste and quota or belongs to any dynasty. Here is a man who is there on the top post, I may say mere by fluke and luck, but has served India well. Towards the end, recession and Mumbai attacks have been severe set backs to his tenure but he has faced this with a cool head devoid of any sort of jingoism.
Second mistake, rather blunder, BJP made was by projecting LK Advani as it’s Prime Minister candidate. Now with all due respects to Advani, he does not command any major following outside BJP cadre. He seems to be a grand old man, spewing venom who has not grown up from his Karachi days but in the mean time, India has certainly moved on. Does Advani have any massive fan following in the small towns and villages across India. Does he have a pan-India following? I doubt. In the previous elections, it was Vajpayee’s persona which did the magic for BJP resulting in votes. Can Advani, repeat the same feat. I have serious reservations.
BJP selection of agenda has been all wrong, both in the previous elections and in the present coming elections. They came up with ‘India Shining’ campaign at a wrong time and now have come up again wrongly with the ‘Ram Mandir’ issue. Why has BJP not projected a young leader at the national level, I fail to understand.
Another issue, which Advani and BJP has been harping on roof top is the internal security and attacks from across the border. BJP’s own record is dismissal on this front. I think the BJP has conveniently forgotten the snub India’s prime minister got from Musharraf while visiting Pakistan who was chief of staff then, the Kargil lapse, the Red Fort attack, the Parliament attack, Indian Airlines flight highjack from Kathmandu and above all the Indian Foreign Minister personally escorting Masood Azhar to Kandhar, he being released from Indian jail. All this happened when Advani was the Dy. PM and home minister of India. The present high posturing being done by Advani and BJP is not going to cut any ice with the voters.
Like the elections in USA, it is the time for healing and giving hope to the countrymen in these times of recession and financial crunch. By raking up the Ram Mandir issue, BJP has suddenly sent wrong signal to the voters. Also the way it’s allied organizations like the Sri Ram Sena and Bajrang Dal have been behaving off late is a matter of concern and will do no good to it’s prospects. We Indian have been spoilt too much by our freedom and will not support any kind of desi brand of Talibans, come what may.
Before, I am termed as a Congress supporter, I must say this blog is about BJP and Advani and how a common voter sees them both. The great Indian election tamasha is about to begin and BJP has taken the lead by turning Shri Ram into it’s polling agent. Will write about Congress, once it shows it cards and what role the ‘Yuvraj’ will play pre and post elections.
