Shimla: The CPI(M) today demanded a CBI enquiry into the assets of absconding Haryana Minsiter Gopal Kanda in Himachal Pradesh whose name has cropped in the Geetika suicide case.
Tikender Panwar, CPI(M) leader alleged that Kanda has a share in a private university in the state and his links with Himachal politicians need to be investigated. He demanded that the name of Himachal politicians who facilitated his entry in Himachal Pradesh should be made public.
Tikender said, “The meteoric rise of this businessman turned politician from running a shop to opening an airline depicts the strong relationship in between politicians and the big business entrepreneurs.”
He said the CPI(M) has all along opposed opening of private universities in the state. “A large number of these universities are run by those who have no connection with education and are here to invest their black money in the state,” he said.
“In the guise of educational institutions they are actually acquiring land for landed estate speculation. These businesses are acquiring land at throw away prices and have developed a land estate mafia in Himachal Pradesh,” Tikender added.
Citing the example of Rajya Sabha member KD Singh, Tikender said Singh had aquired the prime property of Himalayan International School in Charabra in Shimla and now was converting it into a resort.
“He is the same person who is pumping money in the state to build the Trinamool Congress in Himachal Pradesh”, Tikender said.
It was reported in the media earlier that Gopal Kanda had bought Arni University in Kathgarh in Indora in Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh from JK Jain, Chairman of KD Educational Trust. Since Himachal laws forbid the sale of University for a period of 10 years from the date of inception, Kanda’s name does not appear on University documents. Media reports suggested that the University was sold for over Rs. 100 crore.
Arni University foundation stone was laid by Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal on October 4, 2008. ID Dhiman, education minister, Ravinder Ravi, IPH minister, Kishan Kapoor, then transport minister, Sarveen Choudhary, Social Justice Minister and GS Bali, leader Congress party had attended the function then in 2008.
