Shimla (Aug 27, 2016): Three medium intensity earthquakes with epicenter near Rampur Bushehar in Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh jolted the Himalayan state on Saturday morning.
As per reports from the National Centre of Seismology, the first quake measuring 4.6 on Richter scale occurred at 6.44am at a depth of 10 kilometres.
The second quake measured 4.3 at Richter scale occurred at 7.05am at the same depth.
A third quake was felt at 9.05 am at the same spot which measured 4.2 at the Richter scale.
The epicenter of the quakes was 7 km away from Rampur Bushehar in Kullu district across the Satluj valley.
Panic gripped the area and people came out of their homes. People in Rampur said 15 to 20 tremors were felt in quick succession.
The Tribune reported that while the social media sites were abuzz with rumours that buildings had collapsed in Rampur and several other buildings had developed cracks but Rampur SDM Nishant Thakur said no loss of life or property was reported but educational institutes were closed as a precautionary measure.
Tents had been pitched in open places, he said, adding that the earthquake enhanced the risk of landslides due to heavy rain. Fearing more tremors, people were unwilling to enter their houses and were waiting in the open. The attendance in offices was also thin.Tremors were also felt in Shimla, Solan, Chopal and parts of Sirmaur district.
