‘Field Marshal’ Sat Mahajan passes away

Shimla: Veteran Congress leader Sat Mahajan popularly known as ‘Field Marshal’ in state politics breathed his last today morning at New Delhi.

Mahajan was suffering from kidney problem and had undergone surgery and was discharged from Escorts Hospital four days agosat mahajan. His cremation will be done tomorrow at Nurpur.

Born in 1927, Mahajan was elected five times to Vidhan Sabha and also became a MP in 1996. He remained PCC president for three terms. Mahajan had held portfolios like revenue, transport, IPH, Rural development and Panchayat raj as minister in successive Congress government.

Mahajan started his career as president of Nurpur Municipal Committee and remained president for several years. After the merger of lower areas in Himachal Pradesh, Mahajan was the eminent leader of Kangra in Himachal politics.

Sat Mahajan took retirement from politics in 2007 when he was a minister in the then Congress government.

He is survived  by a son and a daughter and his son Ajay Mahajan has been active in state politics for the past few years.

HPCC president Veerbhadra Singh, former HPCC presidents Kaul Singh Thakur, Sukh Ram, Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal and BJP leader Shanta Kumar condoled the demise of Sat Mahajan.
