I run a travel agency in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh and operate a current account in State Bank of India, Lower Bazaar, Shimla branch. I pay salary and other expenses to the drivers in their bank accounts.
On August 8, 2012 I sent a new driver to this branch to open a saving account whose permanent address is of Distt. Bilaspur in Himachal Pradesh. The concerned official at the bank refused to open the saving account saying the driver did not have residence proof of his Shimla address.
I had attached the following documents with the application form:
- Copy of Driving License having address of Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh
- Copy of Adhar card, having address of Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh
- A letter from employer verifying the employment and mentioning his Shimla address.
Upon refusal of the opening of bank account I told the bank official that accounts of other driver has been opened in the the same branch with same documents earlier and they had documents pertaining to their native villages. I wondered how could the bank rules change with a change of person sitting on the counter?
It is clearly mentioned in the application form that letter from the employer is admissible which was provided in this case. When earlier other account was opened with the same set of documents what is stopping State bank to open the saving account now?
The concerned person at the bank also had the audacity to say that I was obliged the last time. It is news to me that opening a saving bank account is considered an obligation by State Bank employees!
Overall attitude of the bank official was pathetic and straight away rude. While PR wing of State Bank of India proclaims SBI being a banker of every Indian, I believe the higher ups should do field visits once in a while and see the demi God attitude of their officials in branches.
Isn’t it ironic that we hard working Himachalis are being denied what is our right to open a bank account in our own state? The superior God like attitude of these bank officials is deplorable. I am not asking for any favors here but all I wanted was a service to be given as per rules.
Very sorry state of affairs indeed. While other banks treat their customers as GOD, State Bank of India treats it’s customers as DOG.
I have written to the higher authorities but I am not hopeful considering the attitude of their work force in branches.
It is hard to believe that in today’s age and competition I am writing about bank not opening a saving account!!
