Dharamshala: Four contestants will try their luck for the crown at the annual beauty pageant Miss Tibet this year. Preliminary rounds for the Miss Tibet Beauty Pageant 2010 were staged at Chandigarh on Saturday.
Yangchen Metok, 19, from Dharamsala, Rinchen Choden, 25, from Bangalore, Tenzin Namchoe, 22, from Bangalore and Tenzin Norzom 23, from Varanasi are the four contenders for this year’s Tibetan beauty crown.
The finale will be held at Dharamshala on June 06. This year’s pageant has been sponsored by Kingfisher Airlines.
The winner will receive a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh.
The four contenders chosen at Chandigarh will undergo a further weeklong training-cum-grooming session prior to the final competition rounds.
The participating Tibetan beauties were critical of Chinese tactics in their homeland and they wished to reaffirm their Tibetan identity.
Not surprisingly, the contest has also irritated the Chinese Communist government. In the past winners of Miss Tibet were forced to withdraw from international beauty pageants after objections from the Chinese government.
This has given Miss Tibet the much needed media attention thereby throwing some spotlight on the Tibetan situation too.
The organisers said they have opted to keep this year’s beauty pageant a low-profile one considering the tragic earthquake that stuck Kyegudo region in Tibet last month. Instead of firecrackers there will be prayers, the organisers added.
