Times of India has reported that Shimla Municipal Corporation has decided to again approach the BJP-ruled Himachal Pradesh government to seek its approval so that it could raise much-needed funds.
Commissioner AN Sharma said despite the state government recently turning down its earlier request to this effect, it would make a fresh move so that the money could be utilized for environment-related works and preserving forests. He said green tax had been imposed in the tourist town of Manali notwithstanding a Himachal Pradesh High Court directive to regulate free flow of tourist traffic. "Conditions in Shimla are no different and imposition of the tax will in no way affect locals," he claimed.
Sources said BJP members of the corporation had been taken into confidence and asked to take up the matter with the CM. "After all if Manali could generate over Rs 3.25 crore last year by imposing green tax, Shimla could generate an equal amount if not more," a BJP member said.
