Himachal govt to offer 50% subsidy on seeds for drought affected farmers

Shimla: Himachal Government will provide 50 percent subsidy on kharif seeds as relief to farmers in view of the losses suffered by the farmers due to drought to the rabi crops.

A govt spokesman said that in the current kharif season, about 35,000 quintals of seeds shall be supplied by the department to the farmers at 50 percent subsidy which will be implemented with immediate effect. The sowing of kharif crops is completed by end of June, all seeds which will be supplied up to June, shall be supplied on subsidized rate. Approximately Rs. seven crore shall be spent as a relief to affected farmers

Himachal Pradesh received deficient rains during October, December, January and March due to which the rabi crops have been damaged. The abnormal rise in temperature during March and April has further damaged the crops.

During the year, 2009-10, the kharif as well rabi crops were damaged due to drought and the Government as a relief to the affected farmers supplied 1,27,167 quintals seeds on 50% subsidy. During kharif season in the year 2009 all districts were declared drought affected.
