Himachal, Punjab jolted with moderate earthquake

Shimla: Two low-intensity earthquakes measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale hit Himachal-Punjab border and the Nicobar islands on Sunday but no damage to property or life was reported.

The first quake shook the Nicobar islands at 0813 AM this morning with its epicenter at a latitude of 8.6 degree north and a longitude of 92.2 degree east, an official of Seismology Division, Department of Science and Technology, said.

The second tremor, also measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale hit the Himachal-Punjab border region at 1223 PM this afternoon.

Its epicentre is located at Hoshiarpur, having a latitude of 31.7 degree north and longitude of 76.1 degree east. The quake shook the areas stretching from Hoshiarpur to Amritsar and the areas bodering Himachal Pradesh.

Last night, an earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale had jolted eastern part of Kashmir.

However, there was no reports of any casualty from the state and union territory authorities so far, he said.
