HPU tense; 57 arrested for violence on campus

Shimla: Tension prevailed at the Himachal Pradesh University campus was on Thursday with students of the students’ Federation of India (SFI) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) clashed with each other.

A physical education lecturer at the University, Sanjay Kumar, was injured when he was manhandled by some students. Sanjay Kumar is a former state vice president of the ABVP. An FIR for criminal assault was registered by the police, in which Sanjay has named five SFI members.

SP Shimla R M Sharma said, 15 students of ABVP and 42 of SFI, seven of them girls, were arrested for violence on the campus. Iron rods and knives were also recovered from them. On the complaint of Sanjay Kumar, five SFI members have been booked for assault and threatening.

He also said on the complaint of the vice-chancellor, a case of illegal trespass has been registered against Naresh Narwal and Munish Sharma, who were expelled under disciplinary action.

A major clash was prevented as the police rounded up many students on the basis of suspicion as they were carrying sharp weapons. Police have been deployed on the campus to maintain calm.

Violence in Himachal University campus has now become an annual ritual before the university elections. Each year the University campus sees violence at the beginning of the new session as all political parties try to show strength through their student wing organizations.
