Shimla: Virbhadra Singh was named leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) after his name was approved by the Congress President Sonia Gandhi today. Janardan Divedi, who was the central observer, made the announcement after a four-hour-long meeting of the CLP on Saturday evening.
The Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting was attended by 34 out of 36 newly-elected party legislators. GS Bali could not attend the meeting as he was in Delhi where he had gone to AIMS for medical checkup and Ram Kumar Chaudhary, the newly elected MLA from Doon is absconding as Panchkula police had issue warrants for his arrest in a murder case.
A Congress leader said the resolution was moved by Virbhadra Singh, and seconded by Vidya Stokes, who won the polls the eighth time, and Kaul Singh, a seven-time MLA.
“He is a mass leader and played a crucial role in bringing the party back to power,” Stokes told reporters after Virbhadra Singh’s name was cleared.
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, AICC secretary Anees Ahmed and party’s state in charge Birender Chaudhary attended the meeting as central observers along with Janardan Divedi.
