Shimla (Jan16): Normal life remained disrupted across Himachal Pradesh after witnessing two days of snowfall and wide spread rains. Temperatures plummeted all across the state as intense cold wave forced people to stay indoors. Weather cleared out a bit on Sunday afternoon as the western disturbance winds active over the state receded.
Shimla experienced 5 cm of snowfall and recorded a minimum temperature of minus 3.3 degrees Celcius on Sunday. This was Shimla’s coldest temperature of this winter season. Shimlaites woke to frozen taps this morning as water supply was disrupted owing to severe cold conditions.
Nearby tourists spots of Kufri and Narkanda also saw good spells of snow in the past two days receiving over 1 foot of snow. Elsewhere, Kasauli in Solan district also experienced snowfall on Saturday.
Met office in Shimla said the entire tribal belt in Kinnaur, Lahaul and Spiti, Kullu and Chamba districts witnessed heavy snowfall in the past two days. Kalpa witnessed snowfall over 10 cm where as moderate snowfall was reported from Manali, Mcleodganj and Dalhousie.
While air traffic resumed in the state on Sunday as all flights operated from Shimla, Kullu and Dharamshala to Delhi, road traffic was severely disrupted in the snow affected areas. Traffic on the Sanjouli – Lakkar Bazaar road in Shimla was affected due to slippery conditions. Traffic was also disrupted near Mashobra affecting the Shimla – Sunni alternate road for upper Shimla areas. Traffic was then routed via Dhami during the day as the road till Totu was blocked in the morning.
A number of vehicles remained stuck in Kufri and Narkanda due to heavy snowfall. Traffic on the Theog Hatkoti road and Theog Choupal road also remained suspended due to heavy snowfall.
As per forecast, weather would remain dry during the next few days with another spell of snowfall predicted over the weekend on Jan 22 and 23.
