Manali: The popular tourist resort of Manali today experienced the season’s first snowfall today as did tribal areas of Kinnaur, Lahaul and Spiti and Pangi and other higher hills and high mountain passes in Himachal Pradesh.
While the tribal areas had intermittent snowfall, the mid and lower hills were lashed by heavy showers, causing a sharp fall in day temperature. Shimla was lashed by a severe storm, reducing the visibility to a few meters. Vehicles were forced to move at snail’s pace with headlights on.
Manali experienced six cm of snow while Rohtang Pass(13,050 ft), gateway to tribal Lahaul valley, had 65 cm of snow. The Pass, which was to be closed officially from October 31, has been closed and people had been advised not to cross the pass during the snowfall.
Many tourist vehicles were stuck near Rohtang Pass by evening and were being rescued as they got stranded in the snowfall during the day
