Shimla: The pollution control board of the Himachal Pradesh government today swung into action again and asked a liquor unit owned by Mohan Meakin Ltd at Solan to stop production due to violation of environment norms.
Pollution control board member-secretary Nagin Nanda said the liquor company Mohan Meakin has been issued a notice for discharging sewage into the vicinity of the facility. It has been asked to stop production immediately as the company was discharging effluents into the nearby fields without treating it. The treatment plant installed in the factory was not working properly and moreover it was not following other environment norms too, he added.
The brewery was was established by a Britisher Edward Dyer from in 1855 at the Kasauli under the name Dyer Breweries. Later, the brewery was shifted to Solan and the brewery site was converted into a distillery, which Mohan Meakin Ltd still operates.
The pollution control board had earlier served notice to the Oberoi Wildflower Hall hotel in Shimla for violating pollution norms which was later stayed by the Himachal High Court on technical grounds.
