New Delhi: Vidya Stokes was today elected Hockey India president after defeating Pargat Singh.
Stokes one of the longest serving MLA from Himachal Pradesh has had a long innings in sports administration. She has been the head of the Indian Women’s Hockey Federation from 1984.
According to media reports, Vidya Stokes got 41 votes against Pargat Singh’s 21.
Vidya Stokes’s nomination was initially in violation of the age stipulation of 70 in the government guidelines.
Narinder Batra, who was the interim secretary general, also retained his post. He defeated Gunjum Haider 44-18. Mushtaque Ahmed was elected the treasurer.
The election previously scheduled for July 30, was stayed by the Delhi and Bombay High Courts. Later, HI moved the Supreme Court that vacated the stay.

Government of India on Thursday officially withdrew the provisional recognition granted to Hockey India, on the grounds that the reasons given by the sports body for continued recognition were not acceptable. The Government had granted provisional recognition to HI and the latter had to respond to its showcause notice by today.
The 83-year-old Stokes was fighting the elections after defying government’s age limitation guidelines.
