Students clash again in Himachal University

One of the last red bastion in the country, The Himachal University, saw a clash again between students owing alliance to SFI (Marxist student organisation) and ABVP (BJP student wing) on Wednesday evening. Police fired shots in air to control the situation. 5 students were injured in the clash and the campus was turned into garrison. With over 100 policemen deployed the reserve police has been asked to be on stand by.

Student politics have ruined the entire educational set-up in the state. While other Universities are in news for their topper lists and research, Himachal University tops thehim1 news for students getting arrested in such clashes. Political parties intervene openly in campus politics. This campus is a nursery for future leaders of the state. A student topping in number of police cases is a sure shot future leader for his/her respective party. Summer Hill, where the University is situated presents an all together different version of the otherwise calm and serene Shimla city. These clashes always take place before the annual campus elections. As Superintendent of Police said in one of the news report, “About half a dozen students from both outfits were injured in the melee, which is a run up to the holding of student elections in HPU”. Education has been turned to a mockery by the highly politicised environment in the campus.

This entire tamasha begins with the entry of new students in the campus. Each party try’s and win them by way of regional influences. Once a particular party starts gaining confidence of these new entrants, the other retaliates. Grudges from the previous year appear and situation eventually turns violent. This happens regularly each year. What is supposed to be a beginning of a new academic session turns into slapping of fresh police cases against the students. Where else they all land up – The last refuge of every scoundrel – Politics!! Eventually many budding careers are reduced to landing up in police lock-up and court cases.

While the state chief minister graces function organized by ABVP in the campus, Marxist leaders too openly interfere in campus politics. A member secretariat CPI(M) is quick to issue denouncement of “high handedness” of the administration. Himachal student politics is a curious mix. ABVP and NSUI (Congress student body) have turned out state level leaders by winning assembly elections. SFI, which has turned the University into ‘red-fort’ over the years has not been able to convert it’s campus superiority into electoral success. Upon leaving the campus, these committed comrades simply disappear. Apart from a lone Shimla seat won by the party way back in early nineties, CPI-(M) has little to show in terms of electoral results in the state.

Student politics need to be controlled and given a proper direction. Entire University cannot be allowed to be hold at ransom. University term is supposed to be a serious learning experience and some fun. If the idea of fun happens to be indulging in violence these student leaders need some serious counseling. As such, this University is notorious for paper leaks. One can very well imagine how our ‘future leaders’ are making to the next semesters after such an ‘eventful’ academic session . PMT paper leak in the past showed the true color of HPU. Wonder why these student leaders never talk about real issues such as paper leaks?

Lastly, why do we need student parties and campus elections? How many will make it to 68 assembly and 4 parliamentary seats!!

HPU might like to take a leaf out of JNU’s books where elections are managed entirely by students through an impartially-chosen Election Commission. Student politics is, in itself, not a bad thing. But if it allowed to run uncontrolled and contributes little towards improvement of students’ life, then it deserves a hard look!
When are the students of HP Univ. going to hold various student outfits *really* accountable?

No student outfit wants to be really accountable! Student politics gives them a license for hooliganism and that is what these leaders are looking for. Check out the ultra atrocious debate taking place on Himvani between these student parties. One can easily find the ‘caliber’ of our future leaders.

One of the misfortune of Himachal, there is a union formed by everyone. Be it students, farmers, employees, teachers, unemployed…. It is just like Air India, the failed national airlines where they have a union for every job.

The problem, is every union highlights the problems but do not seek solution. Himachal will eventually go the Air India way. Irony is this unionism starts here at an early stage when one should be focusing on their education
