Shimla: Traffic remained suspended on the Shimla-Rohru road since last night as a truck overturned near Baghi. All traffic to Rohru has been diverted via Narkanda, Baghi route owing to poor roads conditions on the Theog-Chailla-Kotkhai road for the past one month.
Commuters remained stranded near Baghi and had to hire private taxis and jeeps at exhorbant rates from Baghi to reach Narkanda for their onward journey.
The Narkanda-Baghi-Rohru road is a single road and is also in a very poor shape. The single road is witnessing heavy traffic for the past one month with entire apple from the area being transported along with state and private buses plying on this route resulting in massive traffic jams. A journey from Narkanda to Rohru which normally takes 4 hours is now taking 7-8 hours due to bad road condition and traffic jams.
No policeman can be seen on this stretch to regulate traffic. Long route buses to Rohru are reportdly running late as they get stuck in traffic for hours.
Negligence by the PWD officials in maintaining roads in Shimla district has created problems for apple growers and commuters alike in the monsoon season.
While PWD officals are still to move out and take steps to remove hardship being faced by the people, the elected representitives from the ruling BJP, Kushi Ram Balnatah from Rohru, Narender Bragta from Jubbal-Kotkhai (who is also the horticulture minister in the state cabinet) and Rakesh Verma from Theog (who supports the BJP govt) has remained indifferent to the plight of the general public.
