Apple’s new update for iPhone, iOS 14, was launched on September 16. One of the great features in it allows you to change the default email app from Apple Mail app to another app if it supports the feature. If you’re like me, and use Outlook and Gmail instead of Mail, that’s a big deal.

Usually, if you click on a link to an email address somewhere, your iPhone will open the mail and start a new message, usually from your Apple iCloud account. It’s annoying when this happens, since your email may not be coming from your regular work or personal account, and you might miss responses sent to an inbox that you don’t use.

The change was first announced in June, when Apple revealed iOS 14, in what appears to be an Apple’s attempt to address competitors’ complaints.

It’s easy to change your default email app in iOS 14 and it only takes a few seconds. I changed my account to my work Outlook account, since this is usually the account I send emails from. But a lot of other apps support this very.

Before we start, first make sure that you are running iOS 14.0.1, which fixed the feature bug in the first release of iOS 14.

You can check by opening Settings> General> About. If you need to update, do the following:

  • Connect your iPhone and connect to a Wi-Fi network.
  • Open Settings.
  • Click on General.
  • Choose Software Update.

Let’s get started.

  • Open Settings.
  • Scroll down to the email app you want to use. (I’ll be using Gmail for this example, but it works the same way for Any supported.)
  • Tap on the Gmail icon.
  • Click on “Default Mail Application”.
  • Change to the app you want to use.

This is. Now when you click on a link to start a new email for someone, your iPhone will use the default app that you specified. You can change it at any time by following the above-mentioned steps.
